TAKING PART IN EVENTS
All horses and
ponies (particularly ones from Calgow Stables) should be well turned out
for every event. Please take time to clean your pony and tack!

You may ride in
formal wear, light jodhpurs, shirt and jacket or informally in light
jodhpurs with RED Calgow sweatshirt ..all riders should have long sleeves
when competing…like your horse or pony you should also be well turned out.
There will be a prize each week for the best turned out horse or pony and
rider!

Under 16s will
NOT be allowed to use spurs at competitions

Some tips for warming your horse or pony up
before an             event involving
Walk and Trot only!

  • Get on and
    sort stirrup leathers
  • Walk on a
long rein allowing the horse to stretch
  • Check your
    position
  • Get the
horse to move off your let – use artificial aid(stick!) if necessary
  • Take up
    the contact
  • Do a few
    walk, halt transitions
  • Try
turning a few circles – to the left then to the right
  • Change the
    rein and do the same
  • Go forward
    to trot
  • Do a few
transitions from trot to walk – making them listen to your leg
  • Change the
rein – use a long diagonal
  • Do the
    same on the other rein
  • Try a few
    upward and then downward transitions
  • Ride a 20m
circle in trot then ride it on the other rein
  • Walk down
the centre line in a long rein and halt!

PONIES AND HORSES AVAILABLE FOR LOAN
There are a
number of horses and ponies available for loan at the moment. Here we focus
on two…..

DANNY is a 12.2hh gelding pony. Although he is 18 years old he
seems a lot younger….he is lovely to work with on the ground and is very
mannerly in the stable. Danny is a great lead rein pony and is bombproof
out on hacks. He is a great favourite at the stables and is worth his
weight in gold.

SUNNY is slightly bigger at 13.2 hh and is a grey gelding
pony. Like Danny, he is 18 years old but looks nothing like that age! He
loves jumping and being easy to work with and having good manners in the
stable, he is also a favourite in the riding school….Sunny by name and
sunny by nature!

If you would
like to have either Danny or Sunny on loan – or any of the other horses or
ponies – talk to Anne.  Horses and
ponies are available for loan on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. £10 per day
or £25 for 3 days. It certainly is a great interest for children and adults
alike without having the full expense of owning a pony or horse. Summer is
coming………. Why not come and have a look?

What do you think
about…..

PICNIC HACKS….Linda
is considering organizing some picnic hacks during the summer. Let us know
if you would be interested!

OTHER EVENTS…….are
there any events you would like to see being held at Calgow….let us know!

WORMING
All horses and ponies have had
their “poo” samples taken and they have been sent off for analysis for
worms! This will tell us which actually need worming and specifically which
type of worm we need to treat them for!
POO PICKING AND RAGWORTING…….Please
remember to take your turn to poo pick every week and lift ragwort!  Ragwort is poisonous to the horses and
ponies and we should all be doing our fair share!   Thankyou!

One Response to “Newsletter”

  • Sorry I’ve just got your message……too late to answer your query on time! In case Kelly is coming again the answer is “No” a parent doesn’t have to stay with her!
    Best wishes
